Rules, Rules, Oh! GOLDEN Rules.

Dear Students,

I gather you and your teachers have agreed on setting classroom rules since the start of the year. Whatever those rules may be, have you been applying those golden rules? Take a look at your classroom and reflect on the words and discussions you may have had with your teacher a few weeks ago. Have you taken the pledge? Have you stuck to your word? Are rules meant to be broken or are they set to 'set' order? It may be perhaps wise to re-evaluate those rules and the impact they possibly can have on the overall ambiance of your learning environment. It would not be a pleasant 2 periods if some students were not respecting rules. Rules are meant to give direction, tranquility and equality. We are all in it together.
I invite you to think about the rules that were established in your learning hub and decide whether they are taken seriously or if they are still a work in progress.

A piece of advice: Rules can change you and give you the discipline and courage to succeed. They can help you make friends rather than enemies. They help you move forward into the future and build stronger personal relations.

Best regards,
Ms. Sonja

Review On Answering Short Answer Questions

Reading task type nine: short answer questions

You will be provided with a number of questions which you have to answer. Generally your answers must be in three words or fewer but confirm this with the instructions.

What is being tested is your ability to:

•skim for general information
•read for details
•identify the focus of the question
•understand paraphrase in the incomplete sentences
How to approach short answer questions

Step 1: Read the instructions carefully.
Step 2: Briefly read through all of the questions to get an idea of what information you will have to find in the text.
Step 3: Read the first question more carefully. Decide what information you will skim for. Is it a "what", "where", "when", "who" or "which" question?
Step 4: Once you have found the relevant section of the reading text, look back at the question and decide what specific information you need to answer the question.
Step 5: Read that part of the text more carefully to find the answer.
Step 6: Your answer does not need to be a complete sentence but it does need to make sense grammatically.
Step 7: check for spelling errors
Step 8: If the answer involves money then check that you have added the currency ex: $..If it is a percentage, add %...

IELTS, IELTS, IELTS!

What is IELTS? Where is IELTS accepted? How does IELTS help me? One could say the world speaks IELTS, as IELTS (the International English Language Testing System) is the world’s most proven English test. Over 1.4 million candidates take the test each year to start their journeys into international education and employment and is recognized by more than 6000 institutions in over 135 countries. Even if you are not planning to study overseas, a good IELTS score will make you the first choice for good schools and jobs here at home. Your teachers will work with you throughout the year, but the biggest job will be left up to you. Organize your time, study regularly, and work on each of the four skills (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening) not only at school, but at home. And not to worry - your hard work will pay off, as IAT graduates are now being considered amongst the best in the country!

Welcome Back Grade 11 Students!

Welcome back G11 Students! We are all happy to see you return for another year at the Institute of Applied Technology. This year, you will all make the big jump to IELTS. As many of you already know, IELTS is a very important part of your studies here at IAT and is in fact a requirement for graduation. G11 students have also dropped from 15 periods a week to just 5. Next year, your senior year in G12, you will have 4 classes a week. This means good study habits and organization are more important than ever. Be sure to use your time wisely this year and remember that all IAT staff, teachers and administration alike, are here to help you. Best of luck in your 2010-11 academic year!
